How To Get Your Style Mojo Back

I believe that every woman has a time in her life when she loses her style mojo. It usually happens during life changes such as motherhood, menopause, loss, retirement, or a period when we have more pressing priorities and we suddenly become last on the list.
For me, it happened when I became a mum. I went from dressing confidently for the corporate world to crying over what to wear to toddler group. The good news is that it’s just a passing phase, and when you’re ready, you can get your style mojo back and your confidence too, here's how.
IT’S OK TO INVEST IN YOU
First up, you need to let go of the guilt that sometimes comes with investing time and money in yourself. As women, we often spend a lot of time putting everyone else first. It’s time to start making yourself a priority. What we wear can have a huge impact on how we feel. When you feel good in what you wear, you feel more confident; there’s a lot to be said for a ‘good outfit day’.
ASSESS YOUR WARDROBE
Before you jump straight to the shops, you need to do a bit of reflection first, and the best place to start is in your wardrobe. Go through your clothes, try things on, and have a good sort out. Remove the clothes that are not making you happy, don’t fit, or don’t feel like you. Before you get rid of these items, take a look and see if there is a particular theme or trend among these items so that you don’t make the same mistakes again. Is it because they are all baggy, dark colours, trendy, etc.? Or is it something that you bought in a hurry and just thought, ‘that’ll do’?
Next, take a look at the clothes that you do love, the items that feel like you, make you feel good, and the ones that you always get compliments on whenever you wear them.
Is there a theme about these items, such as a particular detail, fit, colour, print, etc.? If so, make a note of that too. This will help you when it comes to shopping.
CREATE A MOOD BOARD
Next, you need to create a mood board, and the best place to do this is Pinterest. I find Instagram too trend-led, and it’s so easy to be influenced; Pinterest feels more authentic. Start saving photos of outfits and items that you like and are drawn to. It could be that you like a particular pair of boots in one photo or a jacket; just start pinning away. Don’t think too much about it. I find that half-scrolling Pinterest while half-watching TV works for me as I’m then more led by my natural instincts. Once you have created that board, take a look for themes and trends. It could be that you are drawn to classic items, or you might have a more edgy, romantic, or boho style. Remember, there is no right or wrong; it’s what’s right for you.
SHOP WITH PURPOSE
Now you’re ready to start shopping. Just make sure you are shopping with purpose. A huge haul may seem tempting, but you need to make sure you are shopping for your personal style, not just for the sake of filling a wardrobe, as that’s when you will end up with more of those ‘that’ll do’ items. So have your notes with you on the items that didn’t work, and most importantly, the items you love. Have your Pinterest board to hand and shop with all of that in mind. Make sure you try everything on and be really honest with yourself: Do you love it? Does it make you feel good? Does it feel like you? Don’t be tempted by trends; getting your style mojo back is about YOUR personal style—about YOU feeling good in your clothes and, most importantly, feeling like YOU again.
