How To Stay Stylish In The Cold

It’s that time of year again and I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve said I’m freezing in the last week. However, just because it’s cold doesn’t mean you have to scrimp on style. Staying warm doesn’t mean just bundling up with all the layers you can find. You can dress for cold weather and still look stylish, it’s just a matter of knowing how.

So read on to find out how you can stay stylish and warm this winter without looking like a Womble.

DIG OUT THE THERMALS

Thermals have come a long way over the years and I swear by them to keep me toasty warm during winter. Uniqlo does a brilliant heat tech range which I use as a base layer, featuring long-sleeve tops, shoe string vests and leggings that are all fine layers so they won’t leave you looking like the Michelin Man. I’m also a huge fan of Marks and Spencer’s thermal tights which help keep me in skirts and dresses all through winter.

LAYER LIKE A PRO

Layers don’t have to be boring, bulky or hidden. Layering is such a good way to add interest to your outfit. Think visible layers such as a Breton top under a jumpsuit or a polo neck under a dress. Both are a great way to winterise your clothes that you might not normally think to wear when it’s cold. A shirt or long-sleeved tee with the collars or cuffs popping out from under a jumper will also add interest to your look. I also like to layer up my jacket and coats by popping a denim jacket on under a long wool coat with the cuffs and collar popping out, another way to elevate your outfit with added interest and stay warm.

KEEP IT NATURAL

There’s nothing like natural fabrics to keep you warm during winter, as they help retain body heat and block the chill. Think of materials like cashmere, wool and fleece. A silk base layer is also a great idea and helps to keep your layers thin rather than adding bulk. Avoid fabrics like cotton which won’t provide you with any insulation and synthetic fabrics, these are not breathable so they may make you feel initially warm but they then make you sweat and as the heat can’t escape your clothing will then get damp causing you to be cold in the long run.

UP YOUR COAT GAME

Your coat is the first and often the only part of your outfit that people will see in the winter so make it a good one. Go for a coat that will set you apart from the crowd and think about how you can make a statement with your coat alone. Go for a bold colour or choose a texture that will stand out such as faux fur. Prints such as Houndstooth or Leopard will always stand the test of time too. If going bold isn’t your thing then a well cut full-length wool coat will also make an impact. Look for one with small details like stitching, or gold buttons that will add that extra bit of something to your look. We all have a practical outdoor/all-weather coat in our wardrobe but it doesn’t have to be boring. Choose a colourful one rather than the standard black to lift your spirits on a dark day.

A-GAME ACCESSORIES

Winter is the time when you can really max out on the accessories. Think hats, gloves, scarves, ear muffs or snoods to keep you warm and elevate your outfit by adding interest and colour. One thing to make sure of is that your accessories work with your coat to create an overall look. For example, if you’re wearing a more formal coat and smart boots then a beret or a trilby will complete the look along with some leather gloves. If your coat is more relaxed then a beanie and wrist warmers will help create a more casual outfit. Just make sure your accessories elevate your outfit and match your style.
